>> Fancy a new house or building? Just find an empty one that you like,
>> break in and fill it with tenants and you will have a booming
>> business.
>> This disturbing new trend seems to be happening increasingly around
>> Johannesburg.
>>
>> Two cases recently highlighted the plight of property owners who had
>> their building taken away and now find themselves helpless because no
>> one appears willing to assist them.
>>
>> Property agent Sean Borrill, acting on behalf of an owner who lives in
>> Australia, said a building in Main Street was recently "hijacked" from
>> her.
>>
>> "We had tenants who moved out. We then fixed up the building and were
>> looking for new tenants or buyers," he said.
>>
>>
>>
>> 'The utter cheek was astounding'
>>
>>
>> "I arrived at the building a few weeks ago with a prospective buyer,
>> only to find the front gate had been hacked off and the place filled
>> with people."
>>
>> Borrill contacted the person in charge, Clement Nchunu, who produced a
>> letter on a City Power letterhead stating that the owner was R748 261
>> in arrears and he was therefore being given permission to occupy the
>> building.
>>
>> However, Borrill denied they were in arrears. "We were R500 in
>> credit," he said.
>>
>> He said Nchunu and his attorney came to see him and offered to buy the
>> building.
>>
>> "The utter cheek was astounding," he said. "He (Nchunu) forcibly took
>> over the building, then offered to negotiate. It was all like a bad
>> joke."
>>
>>
>>
>> 'It was all like a bad joke'
>>
>> Borrill said the rooms were being rented out at about R400 a month for
>> a space which could take only a mattress and a chair. There were no
>> bathrooms.
>>
>> "It was a warehouse and office space and is not geared for residential
>> living," he said.
>>
>> The water and electricity bill has reached R12 000 within weeks of the
>> illegal occupation, and despite asking City Power to disconnect
>> services, they had not done so. The most frustrating part, said
>> Borrill, was that the Jeppe police had refused to assist him, but had
>> told him to apply for an eviction order, which would cost about R60
>> 000.
>>
>> City Power has denied issuing the letter. Selby Shabangu, whose name
>> appears on it, is dismayed. "I don't know how this happened. Our legal
>> department is dealing with this."
>>
>> Another property owner whose property has been hijacked is Noreen
>> Wade.
>>
>> She owns two semi-detached houses and a shop in the eastern suburb of
>> Bez Valley.
>>
>> Wade had her personal belongings stored in the shop. Recently, the
>> doors were broken down, her goods stolen and the premises occupied by
>> someone who claims he purchased the property at a sheriff's auction.
>>
>> "This is nonsense," said Wade. "The property is still in my name, and
>> there is no judgment against me. I have gone through hell. I was
>> assaulted by some tenants when I tried to collect rent, and no one is
>> prepared to do anything to help me - especially the Jeppe police."
>>
>> The houses have also been taken over by someone who is renting them
>> out to tenants.
>>
>> "The woman who has taken over the houses offered to purchase them
>> several months ago, and gave me a cheque for R10 000 as a deposit.
>>
>> "It bounced and she is now refusing to pay rent while collecting rent
>> from each room on my property," said Wade.
>>
>> Inspector Enoch Masehla, spokesperson for Jeppe police station, said
>> on Tuesday: "I will be handing over these two cases to the public
>> prosecutor tomorrow. If he instructs us to evict the people for
>> trespassing, we will do so."

12.....eh, 14. Vir my veel belangriker as die pap toertjie Engeland toe
Mandy Rossouw
Kaapstad. Pres.
verkragting gesystap.
'n Klein deel daarvan was as insetsel op die Sewe-uur
nuus gewys. Mandy Rossouw borduur heel interessant
My daaglikse koerant is die Daily News want dit gaan gewoonlik
In
raakten gewond.
Gastvrijheid in Zuid-Afrika.
