Chaos as rains cause floods and mudslides
March 12, 2008
Rivonia Naidu
After a night of lashing rain, lightning and thunder, Durban residents
this morning negotiated roads that were flooded, strewn with debris
and coped with mudslides and defective traffic lights.
The N2 near Durban International Airport was closed to light motor
vehicles after last night's storm.
Those travelling in light motor vehicles from Amanzimtoti into Durban
were diverted through Moss Kolnik drive, then Kingsway and through
Prospecton.
It was not clear when the road would be reopened.
While parts of Durban International Airport were flooded, management
said it was unlikely to affect flight schedules.
Motorists also had to negotiate a string of defective traffic lights
including the entire length of Edwin Swales Drive, the intersection of
Berea and Musgrave roads, West Street, Smith Street and Commercial
Road. Motorists travelling on the roads this morning were advised to
be aware of strewn refuse, mud, debris and missing manhole covers.
Deputy head of Metro Police Steve Middleton said it was likely the N2
would be opened by this afternoon.
He said eThekwini engineers were at the scene and Metro Police were
waiting for their findings.
Johann van Bargen, East Coast Radio's traffic reporter, said there
were concerns and complaints from people about numerous mudslides,
debris build-up, manhole covers missing, stones, sand and tree
branches scattered across roads, and potholes in many areas in the
province as a result of the severe thunderstorms.
He said by 7.30am at least 25 traffic lights were out of order in the
city.
Predicted
A forecaster at the Durban Weather Bureau said last night's rain was
heavier than anticipated.
"We had at least 100mm of rain at the airport and we will have rain
for the next two days."
The forecaster said light rain was predicted for the rest of the week,
with a strong south-easter expected this afternoon in Durban.
Sapa reported that overnight rains had flooded the Merebank area near
Clairwood Racecourse.
"The area near the racecourse was completely submerged. It was the
result of blocked drains," said Insp Deveneran Pillay, a resident.
"People were helping each other - breaking walls to get people out of
houses. The water levels were up to 1.8m. Cars were floating and
others were completely submerged," he said.
Firefighters said they worked throughout the night, assisting people
as they received several calls of flooding from Durban central and the
southern areas.
Divisional commander for Durban central Alfred Newman said in the
metro region alone they responded to more than 100 calls of motorists
being stuck in flooded roads.
ER24 spokesman Derek Banks said paramedics could not respond to any of
the cases they were called out to because of the bad weather.
"We couldn't reach people, so we couldn't carry out transfers or
assist people who were stuck in mud in their vehicles or those
involved in car accidents. The rain was just hectic and roads were
flooded," he said.
Banks said they received calls mostly from the areas of Durban such as
Pinetown, Isipingo and Chatsworth.
Netcare 911 area manager Kerry Staples said there had been a few
fender benders, but no serious accidents were reported.
Hierdie was sy reply...
wees. Die goed is flippen barbare! Als word afgebreek, gesteel en niemand
doen NIKS!
onderlangs.
(foodcourt) afgegooi. Sy moes kaal koshuis toe hardloop.
MAAR, niemand van hul is rassisties nie. Wit moet weg, steeds hul nie
rassisties nie. Gisteraand op 3rd degree (E-tv 20:00) is alle Christene as
rassiste gemerk.
ALMAL is oppad
doodgelag.
Daar is allerhande
Hulle was so 12
swartes teen hom alleen gewees.
is nogsteeds styf.

Empainette Mbeki geskryf is.

Foord was gang-raped by five men in front of her father on Sunday in
Shongweni while out walking their dogs at a local farm dam.
Kom ons kyk of julle hieroor ook so 'n kettingreaksie gaan opsit.

Arrests made in Hillcrest gang rape
As police attempted to arrest a gang rape protester outside Durban's
Hillcrest police station on Friday, a crowd surrounded the officer and
requested that they all be arrested.
"Arrest us all, arrest us all ... same as the rapists ... so point
your guns at the rapists," the growing crowd shouted.
Scores of people began protesting outside the police station in
condemnation of the gang-rape of a 21-year-old woman on Sunday.
Her boyfriend, her family and relatives were also at the scene.
Police attempted to arrest one of the protesters after he had parked
his vehicle on both lanes on Old Main Road, blocking traffic flow and
the entrance into the police station.
After talking to police, the man was not arrested.
Other demonstrators, most of them men, stood in the centre of the road
and brought traffic to a standstill.
A larger group or protesters had earlier gathered outside the Pinetown
Magistrate's Court, threatening to kill the five men accused of the
crime.
At least 1 000 people had earlier turned up at the Pinetown
magistrates court in Durban expecting the appearance of the five,
blocking all roads to the court with cars and motorcycles.
However it emerged that the five had already appeared in court on
Thursday and were refused bail.
When they heard this, the protesters descended on the Hillcrest police
station about 20km away, where it was believed another man was
arrested for raping a six-year-old boy.
Hillcrest police however denied the incident, saying "nothing of the
sort was ever reported here".
One of the protesters Janine Waters said: "The family is really upset
.. .They were not aware that the five accused appeared in court
yesterday(on Thursday) because police had said they would appear today
(Friday) ... They had no right to keep this information from the
family because they wanted to be at the hearing," she said.
As protesters became rowdy, senior Hillcrest police officers addressed
the crowd and appealed for calm.
Several protesters and one police officer on the scene told Sapa that
a loudhailer was used to tell the five accused in Zulu that they would
be killed.
Some protesters carried posters reading "No bail for rapists" and
"Slow death for rapists".
Motorists and taxi drivers along Old Main Road hooted in support of
the protesters, who at one stage, stood on the bakkie's roof and
demonstrated.
Bouquets of flowers were also handed to woman at the protest.
There was a heavy police presence monitoring the protest, but there
were no immediate reports of damage or arrests.
Protester, Michelle van Heerden said: "We are really disappointed in
the government. The death penalty should be reinstated."
She said that if the government was serious about corruption and
crime, then "they need to act now or we will all be doomed."
Foord was gang raped in a sugarcane plantation in Hillcrest on March 2
while her father was held at gunpoint nearby.
The two had been fishing at a dam when they were accosted by seven
men.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Danelia Veldhuizen confirmed to
Sapa that the five men arrested in connection with the incident
appeared in court on Thursday. She said they were refused bail.
Veldhuizen confirmed that two attackers were still on the loose.
Both Veldhuizen and another police spokesman Superintendent Vincent
Mdunge denied reports circulating among protesters that other men had
been arrested for raping a six-year old boy in the Hillcrest area.
Mdunge said: "There is no such case at the [Hillcrest police] station
and nobody has been arrested for such a case."
