[Johannesburg, September 13 ] - The South African government on Thursday
dismissed as "psychological and financial terrorism" an e-mail purporting to
contain a CNN article which claims South Africans were behind Tuesday's
terror attacks in the United States.
Government spokesman, Joel Netshitenzhe, said in a statement that the
message "is simply and utterly a hoax".
The e-mail features several grammatical errors, while the word boycott was
spelt in Afrikaans and Libya was misspelt.
It claimed that US Secretary of State Colin Powell had hinted that the South
African government itself could be involved in the spate of attacks.
It also alleged that video footage at the airport "revealed that at least
three South Africans boarded each fatal plane".
"The subject is still under investigation but sources believe that it has a
strong link to the recent US boikot (sic) of the racism conference held in
the South African city of Durban," the e-mail read.
"CNN information sources disclose to CNN that some of the masterminds might
be in hideaway in South Africa. Strong links has (sic) also been made
between SA and Lybia (sic)."
Netshitenzhe said South African intelligence agencies had contacted their US
counterparts and confirmed that no such statements were made.
"The South African government hopes that the media, both here and abroad,
will handle this piece of psychological and financial terrorism with the
contempt it deserves," he said.
"It should be expected that people with depraved minds might wish to take
advantage of such developments to achieve their own wicked intentions."
Netshitenzhe added that the e-mail was authored "before any statements on
the investigations had been issued by the US government".

The US-secretary of state, Colin Powell, revealed late last night that
there is a strong possibility that South Africans and possibly the South
African Government might be involved in the terrorism attacks.
Video footage at the airports revealed that at least three South Africans
boarded each fatal plane. The subject is still under investigation but
sources believe that it has a strong link to the recent US boikot of the
racism conference held in the South African city of Durban.
Information gleaned from the hijacked planes' passenger lists have led to
search warrants that the FBI is in the process of or will soon be executing
search warrants in more than one location in South Africa, Florida and
Canada, including homes and post office boxes, a law enforcement source told
CNN.
"We're looking at South Florida ties to some of the people we're looking
at," the source said. Also, in South Africa, a search will be done on a
location in Durban.
CNN Information sources disclose to CNN that some of the masterminds might
be in hideaway in South Africa. Strong links has also been made between SA
and Lybia.
Bush late on Tuesday issued a warning to any nation that may be giving
refuge to those responsible for the terrorist attacks.
"We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts
and those who harbour them," the president said from the Oval Office of the
White House as he promised retaliation.
Daar is al klaar grappies hier in omloop, en nogal in goeie smaak ook onder

Iemand wie ek ken, sonder enige besondere kwalifikasies, wil graag vir
avontuur oorsee gaan werk. Enige land. Dit moet darem veiliger wees as SA,
so byna die hele wêreld kan... :-)
Hoe kan mens dit doen sonder om geld aan (onbetroubare) agentskappe te
betaal?
Ek het al gehoor dat dit nogal maklik is om vir twee jaar in Engeland te
werk. Hoe begin mens? Ek weet dat jy jonger as 'n sekere ouderdom moet
wees...
