HAVANA, April 18 (Rafael P�rez, AFPCP) - After a period of relative calm,
police in the streets of Havana have begun stopping, searching, and in some
cases, arresting citizens in a campaign that has no apparent objective and
that residents perceive as capricious.
"When a policeman gets it into his head to arrest you, he simply puts you in
one of those trucks and you go in even if you haven't committed any crime,"
says a student who says he has undergone the experience several times.
Policemen patrol the Havana municipality of 10 de Octubre like bees,
standing at the
intersections of main thoroufares to check out passersby.
"This is like a giant prison," said Roberto, a resident of 10 de Octubre who
asked that his last name not be used.
"No one can walk peacefully down 10 de Octubre Street," said self-employed
businessman Pedro Isasis, adding "Instead of making sure there should be
medicines and food, they spend money in these police operations in which
they never capture the criminals anyway."

Die probleem is dat die meeste "onbekende" mense eenvoudig skoert sodra
hulle sien hulle gaan verloor, dan sit 'n ou daar met 'n goeie hand maar
geen oponent nie. Die meeste mense wil stuipe kry as hulle enige spel
verloor, maar ekself gee glad nie om om te verloor nie. Meestal omdat ek
heel onortodoks en onkonvensioneel speel, maar ook partykeer net om te sorg
dat die oponent tot die einde bly.
Toe dag ek mens kan miskien liewer so 'n "rolling sosiale" toernooi vir die

Fanie's house. They set about searching the braai lapa where the firewood is
kept. They dismantle the Weber braai. They empty out the bags of charcoal.
The clean out all of the ashes from the last braai. Using axes they chop
open every piece of firewood, but find no dagga. They shout and swear at
Fanie and leave.
The phone rings at Fanie's house. "Hey, Fanie! Did the cops come to your
place?"
"Ja!"
"So, did they chop your firewood?"
