Dwelms in skole

Vr., 11 Maart 2005 05:40

Plaasgrond: interessant

Do., 10 Maart 2005 10:10

'n Kliënt van my vertel my pas 'n storie.
2. Omgekeerde apartheid en diskriminasie vier hoogty.

Nkosi Sikelel' as bad as Die Stem

Mar 09 2005 07:51:28:797AM
Chris Roper
Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika is a "revoltingly religious" propaganda tool, and
sounds like a dog's breakfast looks, says Chris Roper.
I'm not a patriotic kind of guy. I love South Africans, because I've met
them, and because, hey, I am one. I love people's ideas of what it means for
them to be South African.
But I don't love South Africa, because I've never met it. And I hate
national anthems.
For me, there's very little difference between Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika and
Die Stem.
They're both propaganda tools, designed to bind people to swearing undying
(or in some cases, dying) loyalty to an idea of a country, an idea that
changes as and when politicians need it to change.
They're both Christian nationalism put to music, although I'm perfectly
willing to concede that history has made Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika more
palatable than Die Stem.
Not much more palatable, though. It's revoltingly religious, considering
we're supposed to be a secular nation.
I'm sure it's a shining example of South African reconciliation, but
frankly, it sounds like a dog's breakfast looks.
The ANC has a link from their site (www.anc.org) to the official version of
our anthem, and a translation into English. It includes these millenarian
yearnings:
"Descend, O Spirit
Descend, O Holy Spirit
Lord bless us
Your family."

The ANC website also gives some of the words to The Internationale, the
famous workers' song. Oddly, they leave out this bit:
"No saviour from on high delivers
No trust we have in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear."

One wouldn't want to get into a conspiracy theory here. Although it IS
almost irresistible.... oh, what the hell.
My conspiracy theory is that they don't want to remind the mass of religious
voters who voted for them that their party is built on a secular platform.
And they're uncomfortable about the bit about not trusting your betters.
Of course, the more likely explanation is that the person in charge of the
site cut and pasted incorrectly. But still, let's not let common sense get
in the way of a perfectly good conspiracy theory.
Given the state of our local music industry, some people might argue that a
national anthem that sounds like one of those Hooked on Crap Music cds with
all the songs mixed into each other is perfect for this country.
But I can't help feeling sorry for Bafana Bafana before every match. We're
supposed to have a team of players with rhythm, for heaven's sake!
How are they supposed to go out and perform after going through such a
confusing musical experience? No wonder they're always falling over their
own feet.
I've never understood this fetish for playing national anthems before
sporting events, anyway.
Wouldn't it make more sense to play the advertising jingle of the shirt
sponsor? Does anyone still think that sport is a substitute for actual wars?
No, there's no substitute for the real thing.
Save the anthems for people who're actually about to die. Every time I hear
a national anthem played, I can't help thinking - "Oh oh... my nation is
about to ask me to forgive another one of its cock-ups."
I'd rather believe in the people, no matter what soundtrack they choose for
their lives.
Chris Roper thinks that I will survive should be our national anthem. What's
YOUR choice? Let Chris know.

Suid Afrika is 'n afrika land.
afrika standaarde. Hier is meer fasiliteite beskikbaar vir alle Suid
Afrikaners as enige ander plek in afrika.
