Terwyl die dodelike, geneesmiddelbestande vorme van tuberkulose, MDR-
en XDR-TB, onrusbarend vinnig deur KwaZulu-Natal versprei, stuur die
enigste hospitaal wat dié pasiënte daar behandel hulle nou huis toe
omdat hulle nie meer beddens beskikbaar het nie.
Die provinsiale gesondheidsdepartement word ook deur 'n span
tuberkulose-kenners daarvan beskuldig dat hy misluk het in sy pogings
om die verspreiding van XDR- en MDR-TB te beheer.
In 'n verdoemende verslag wat aan dr. Busi Nyembezi, provinsiale
gesondheidshoof, voorgelê is, sê kenners van die
Wêreldgesondheidsorganisasie, die Suid-Afrikaanse Mediese
Navorsingsraad en die nasionale gesondheidsdepartement hoewel 'n goeie
plan opgestel is, is tuberkulose steeds buite bedwang.
"Die tekort aan beddens by die verwysingsentrum (King George V-
hospitaal in Durban) het daartoe gelei dat waglyste van tot honderd

Nyembezi sê in 'n verklaring die provinsie se probleem met die styging
in MDR-TB-gevalle is vererger deur die uitbreek van XDR-TB by die
Church of Scotland-hospitaal in Greytown verlede jaar. Volgens haar
het dié skielike styging tot 'n tekort aan beddens gelei en druk op
laboratoriumdienste geplaas. MDR-gevalle het van 270 in 2000 gestyg
tot 683 verlede jaar, tesame met die 221 XDR-TB gevalle wat verlede
jaar in Greytown, en nog 26 in die res van die provinsie gediagnoseer
is.
Daar is vir die eerste keer oor XDR-TB berig nadat wetenskaplikes

van die siekte in die noorde van KwaZulu-Natal. Van die eerste 53
pasiënte wat destyds gediagnoseer is, was 52 MIV-positief en almal is
intussen dood.
Sedert die dramatiese styging in aangemelde gevalle het die
gesondheidsdepartment satelliet-hospitale ingerig wat spesifiek XDR-TB-
gevalle sal hanteer.
Volgens die kenners se verslag lei 'n gebrek aan infeksiebeheer by
sowel die King George V-hospitaal in Durban as die vroeë ontslag van
pasiënte daartoe dat "XDR-TB deur die hospitaal versprei word".
Luidens die verslag word XDR-TB-pasiënte nie geïsoleer nie. Die
kenners beveel aan dat 150 beddens en bykomende personeel lededringend
beskikbaar gestel word om die pasiënte te versorg.
'n Dokter by die King George V-hospitaal, wat anoniem wil bly, sê
egter dit sal moeilik wees om dokters en algemene
verpleegpersoneellede te kry omdat hulle bang is en daar geen
aansporings vir personeellede is wat hulle aan die weerstandige
bakterie blootstel nie. "Daar is 'n risiko. Jy stel jou bloot en as jy
