'There was never any mention of the k-word'
In the latest twist to the Edgemead High School drama, a witness has
come out saying the allegations of racism levelled against the school
are being blown completely out of proportion.
A Bothasig resident said he chose to come forward because he wanted
to set the record straight. The 32-year-old man said he did not want
to be identified as he feared for the safety of family members at the
school.
He said he had no reason to fabricate the story.
The eyewitness, who went to collect his Grade 8 nephew at the school
at 3pm on the day of the incident, said he was shocked by media
reports relaying Nosipho's innocent account of events.
'He had no reason to fabricate the story'
Nosipho's mother, Vicky Mkhize, told the Cape Argus her daughter was
dragged to the school's tennis courts by her hair, kicked in the
face, stabbed with car keys and called a "kaffir" by a white woman.
The eyewitness explained that this was not entirely true.
"I witnessed the entire incident and there was never any mention of
the word 'kaffir'."
When he parked his bakkie inside the school premises on Thursday,
November 6, he allegedly saw a woman sitting in her car having an
argument with some of the pupils. "I saw a black girl approaching the
car where the woman was obviously arguing with other pupils. The
woman told the black girl that the argument did not concern her and
went on to ask the pupils she had been arguing with why they were
constantly interfering with her daughter.
"Nosipho and the white woman walked away from the car and were
screaming and swearing at each other."
'You are f-king white trash'
He said Nosipho then allegedly smacked the white woman in her face
and said: "You are f-king white trash."
The white woman retaliated and pushed her. She had her keys in her
hand but did not stab Nosipho with them.
According to the eyewitness, "the black girl went off and started
swearing and carrying on". He said the white woman tried to walk away
but the black girl would not leave things alone and allegedly hit her
from behind. The woman's daughter then yelled "don't hit my mother
like that", which got the Grade 10 pupils at each other's throats.
"The girls went at each other and pulled each other's hair."
The eyewitness and a teacher then tried unsuccessfully to separate
the girls. "They were worse than men and one could not pull them
apart," he said.
Nosipho also allegedly told the teacher to "f-k off" when he told
them to stop fighting.
The girls then fell on the floor hitting and scratching each other.
Dresses were up in the air and their underwear was exposed.
While the white girl was on top of the black girl, someone in the
crowd also then screamed there was faeces on the ground. "I assumed
that one of the girls had soiled their underwear but I did not look
closely enough to notice which one it was," he said.
After the fight, the white girl had a black eye and all three women
involved in the fight were in tears. According to the eyewitness, the
white girl's boyfriend did not touch the black girl. The only thing
he did was to threaten to get involved when some black boys spoke of
helping the black girl, saying they would stab someone.
When the white woman left the school, he alleged that Nosipho, who
seemed upset, screamed profanities at her and said: "You will pay for
this, my father is a minister."
