Well, I think I understand the above, but I don't understand the next
two sentences. Namely:

Okay, I take that back. After looking up some words in the on-line
dictionary, I think you're saying that Esperanto doesn't have a future.
(BTW, if I understand better Afrikaans than you understand Esperanto, it
might be because I look up the words I can't guess.)
Of course I disagree. But since I am not able to discuss the topic *in*
Afrikaans, and since we haven't related the future of Esperanto to
Afrikaans or Afrikaans culture, I'll not go into it here, but if you're

I don't understand "ontstaan en verdwyning" and the dictionaries aren't
helping me much.

I'm not sure I understood all this either, but languages are not "alive"
in the same way animals and plants are alive. People are alive.
Languages exist only in people.

Like I said before, -tale- are not alive like -dieren- or -planten-.
Languages exist only in people. People are alive. Not langauges.
What you said about the -ontstaan en verdwyning van tale- is (-in my
opinie-) more or less true about native languages, but it is less true
when it comes to second languages.
Learning a second language (be it Afrikaans, English, Esperanto,
whatever) is a very deliberate process. Although languages are pretty
stable, numbers of second language speakers vary much more. Simple
political changes can have drastic effects on the number of foreign
speakers who learn a language.
For example, German was once a very popular language to learn in the
USA. When we went to war against the Germans, people suddenly (almost
overnight) stopped learning German.
To say Esperanto -geen toekoms het- is to misunderstand Esperanto's
past.
By the way, this exchange of notes in Afrikaans has encouraged me to
want to actively learn Nederlaans. I think I might start in 6 months or
so. (For now, I want to keep working on German till after I go to
Germany, and I also want to make a little more progress on Japanese
before I start another language.)
How does that make you feel? -- that
soc.culture.south-africa.afrikaans encouraged me to learn Dutch.

Ek gaan akkoord met alles wat jy hierbo sê.
Maar in die geval van Esperanto word daar probeer om 'n taal te
_maak_. Volgens my kan 'n mens nie 'n taal maak en dan verwag
dat mense dit vrywillig sal praat nie.

Dat ek verkul is ;-).
Terloops, die twee tale is "Nederlands" en "Afrikaans". Was jou
gebruik van die woord "Nederlaans" miskien 'n Freudiaanse glips?
