Hello!
I am curious as to the experiences of those of you who speak English as
well as Afrikaans and, ideally, have moved from South Africa to either
America/England/Australia/etc.
I'm a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. My parents were
born and raised in South Africa, and then moved with my older brother to
America where I was later born. They were taught Afrikaans in school and
spoke it as well as English. After moving to America in '75, they
gradually ceased from speaking it. They did not teach it to my brother or
I.
So those of you who speak English AND Afrikaans, I am very curious as to
how you "handle" both languages in your daily life. When do you choose to
speak one rather than the other? What determines that choice? Have you
stopped speaking Afrikaans, and if so, why? I have more questions, but am
hoping to see how well this email is responded to. Please post to either
the newsgroup or my personal email address
Thanks very much!
