BC-PAKENHAM-IRAQ
PAKENHAM-IRAQ by Leon Engelbrecht
JOHANNESBURG Oct 27 Sapa
WAR HISTORIAN FINDS PARALLELS BETWEEN BOER WAR, IRAQ
Boer War historian Thomas Pakenham has likened the 1899-1902
conflict with that currently raging in Iraq.
Speaking at the Old Fort, now part of the Constitution Hill
complex in Johannesburg, the noted author said the administration
of George W Bush has made many of the same mistakes as British
colonial High Commissioner Lord Alfred Milner.
"Both wars were avoidable. Both the people in favour and against
the conflicts afterwards agreed on this. Neither war was forced
upon Britain or the United States," Pakenham said.
Milner and Bush also used similar arguments to further their
respective cases for war by arguing that time was not on their
side.
Victorian authorities argued that late 19th Century arms imports
were making the Boers stronger -- and a threat to the subcontinent.
Bush argued sanctions were failing and that Saddam Hussein would
soon regain weapons of mass destruction with which to threaten his
neighbours.
"It is the same arguments at play 100 years apart," Pakenham
said.
"Both Milner and the neo-cons (Washington neo conservatives)
seized on the large amount of weapons.
Both wars also involved strategically important resources, oil
in the case of Iraq and the Victorian equivalent, gold, in the
local instance.
At the time the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek (ZAR) was the world's
largest single supplier of gold to states that had just gone onto
the gold standard, while Iraq had oil reserves second only to Saudi
Arabia.
"In each case we have a superpower saying 'here is a
strategically important resource we need to control... If we can't
have it we will have to grab it'."
Another parallel was that both the ZAR and Iraq were poor
countries suddenly empowered by large amounts of money.
In 1870 the ZAR was so poor it could not afford to pay its civil
servants, leading to annexation by the British.
The British then and the Americans in 2003 also convinced
themselves that they were not occupiers but liberators, liberating
Boer and Uitlander (unfranchised foreigners) from the iron heel of
Paul Kruger and Iraqis from the iron heel of Saddam.
They also convinced themselves it would be a short, sharp war
and that once they had occupied Pretoria and Baghdad their new
subjects would acquiesce. Neither foresaw the guerrilla war that
came instead of the expected victory.

Nee, dis baie welkom as iemand hierdie soort joernalistiek
versprei. Dis alleen irriterend wanneer mense dinge in
Engels op die nuusgroep sit wat niks met Afrikaans of SA
te doen het nie. Soos Australiese grappe. Of stukke oor

Dis of
Afrikaans of nie, of hoe. ("Flip-flop" - kom ons raai - jy ondersteun
Kerry?)
