Ek vra nederig om verskoning dat die artikel in engels is maar weens
omstandighede en tyd kon ek nie die afrikaanse weergawe opspoor nie.
Kan iemand asseblief die artikel vir ons net oorvertaal na afrikaans.

NNP gets into bed with ANC

Pretoria - The New National Party, which has its roots in the party
that ruled South Africa during apartheid, said on Saturday it was
considering marriage with its historical archrival the African
National Congress.

NNP leader Marthinus van Schalkwyk said it was the "logical next step"
to take after the two parties entered into a "relationship of
co-operation" before April 14 general elections which saw NNP support
crash to a record low.

"There has been a fundamental realignment of South Africa's party
political environment over the last ten years, requiring all parties
to re-examine their role and contribution to the future development of
South Africa," Van Schalkwyk said at a media conference in Pretoria,
reading from a joint NNP-ANC statement.

The statement said both parties had agreed to "strengthen and deepen
the relationship of co-operation between the two parties".

"The NNP has evolved politically to a point where it is well placed to
play a meaningful role in working with others to address the social,
economic and psychological legacy of that system," Van Schalkwyk said.

Van Schalkwyk, who was appointed tourism minister in President Thabo
Mbeki's new cabinet, was speaking after a meeting of the NNP's
national federal council where the Free State province proposed that
the party be disbanded.

However the national council voted 56-4 in favour of the joint
statement that said the ANC and NNP should "engage their structures
and membership".

That is exactly the point

Asked whether this meant the NNP was contemplating marriage with the
ANC, Van Schalkwyk replied: "If there are not journalists who
understand that that is exactly the point I don't know how more I can
explain it."

"We took a very fundamental decision this morning. The meaning of this
decision is the NNP's future lies together and with the ANC. I cannot
put it more clearer than that.

"This is a decision that means it is a quantum leap. It is a decision
that says it's not business as usual. We now take a next logical and
necessary step."

He said the ANC would present the proposal for ratification to its
national executive at a meeting on July 5 after which the leadership
of both parties would work out the finer details.

Van Schalkwyk, who has been nicknamed "Kortbroek" for his general lack
of gravitas, took over the NNP reigns when FW de Klerk retired as
leader, shortly after De Klerk pulled the old National Party out of a
joint government with the ANC in June 1996.

Van Schalkwyk failed to live up to the enormous task of shedding his
party's apartheid baggage.

Despite a new image, a new name - the "New" National Party - and a new
slogan, its support dwindled from 20% in the 1994 elections to 6.8% in
1999.

But the final blow came in general elections this year when it
alienated its traditional white support base by entering into a
"relationship of co-operation" with the ANC. It mustered less than two
percent of the vote.
