naby is gevind.

Daar was dus 'n
enkele oomblik 'n kragonderbreking.

Shock death for thief
22/03/2002 14:52 - (SA)
An unknown man was shocked to death when 11 000 volts surged through
his body while he was busy stripping an electrical cable to get to the
copper inside. The incident happened in the early hours of Friday
morning, just outside Welverdiend. Mr Chris Spies, interim Head:
Electrical Engineering of Merafong City Municipality, said the man
could have met his death in two ways: either he mistakenly thought the
power was off and it was safe to cut through the cable, or he tripped
the power, after which it switched on automatically, sending the man
to an instant death. He said by stripping electrical cables, copper
thieves not only play with their lives, but also cause millions of
rands worth of damages to the underground electrical cables. ÂThe
length of cable this man stripped would have earned him about R150
from a scrap metal dealer, but in the process he caused damages of
nearly R5 000. Mr Spies said the theft of copper cables was also the
cause of the horrific train accident in Kwa Zulu/Natal earlier this
year. An Eskom transformator which was damaged in Khutsong recently,
resulted in a three day power failure and cost nearly R1 million to
repair. ÂWe really need the public`s help with this, because more and
more thieves are stealing copper cables. Whenever a member of public
sees anyone with cables or metal, either with him or on a bakkie, he
must please report the matter to the police. This is the only way it
will stop.Â
