Another two men suspected of involvement in the murder of a top
KwaZulu-Natal police officer have been shot dead by the police in
Mandeni.
The killings on Thursday come just three days after two of their
accomplices, Magojela Ndimande and Sibusiso Thokozani Tembe, were shot
dead during a pointing out procedure.
A fifth member of the group, 28-year-old Lee Buthelezi was killed by
police in KwaDukuza two weeks ago.
The five were believed to be part of a gang that shot dead
Superintendent Zethembe Choncho, of the Kranskop police station, in an
ambush on the north coast last month.
The deaths bring the total number of murder suspects killed by police
in September to seven.
Two men linked to the triple murder of the Sham family in Durban were
shot dead by police last weekend.
Top Durban attorney 56-year-old Naren Sham, his wife Meera, and their
son Kavir, 20, were stabbed to death in their home on September 5.
Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said the latest incident took place on
Oribi Road, in Mandeni, on Thursday afternoon.
Police were following up on a tip-off about the whereabouts of the
suspects in the cop-killing.
"They found the house the suspects were hiding in and knocked at the
door," he said.
A child opened it and let them in. Police asked the boy to leave the
house.
Police found the door to a room locked and identified themselves.
"They asked the suspects to open the door and that's when shots were
fired towards the door from inside the room," Mngomezulu said.
Officers kicked open the door as the man continued to fire at them.
Police returned fire and the man was shot dead.
A second man hiding in the wardrobe then jumped out and began
shooting.
"Police also shot him," said Mngomezulu.
Both died at the scene.
Last month, safety and security MEC Bheki Cele urged the police to
shoot criminals following the deaths of Chonco and another officer,
