Krugersdorp. – Die saak teen twee tieners, wat van die moord op ’n
donkerkop matriekmeisie van die Wes-Rand aangekla is, is gister na die
direkteur van openbare vervolging (DOV) verwys vir beslissing.
Die twee tieners, mnr. Ken Maree (18) en ’n 15-jarige seun, het gister
agter geslote deure in die landdroshof hiér verskyn.
Hul verskyning hou verband met die dood van Cassandré van Rooyen (17),
’n matriekmeisie van Hoërskool Bekker op Magaliesburg, wat op 18
Februarie met ’n klein kaliber vuurwapen op ’n hoewe in Tarlton, buite
Krugersdorp, in die agterkop geskiet is.
Haar lyk is twee dae ná die moord in lang gras ontdek waar sy agter ’n
sementdam op die Garlic Growers-hoewe versteek was.
Maree het saam met ’n minderjarige seun (15), wat weens sy
minderjarige ouderdom nie geïdentifiseer mag word nie, kort ná 09:00
by die hof opgedaag.
Die jonger beskuldigde het saam met sy ma in die geselskap van die
Maree-gesin opgedaag en skuiling agter ’n serp en ’n tydskrif gesoek.
Weens die in camera-sitting is dit nie duidelik of die DOV moet beslis
oor verdere vervolging van die beskuldigdes en of die saak vir die
bepaling van ’n hooggeregshofdatum verwys is nie.
Die moordwapen is reeds drie maande lank soek.
Die saak is tot 3 Julie uitgestel.

floor. Her hands had been tied up," said Veldhuizen.
Witnesses told police they spotted two men in a white car talking to

It is believed that she was strangled, said Veldhuizen. There were no
signs of her being raped.
Veldhuizen said that several household goods were taken.

in his car and gave chase after the fleeing robbers.

"One of the men inside the vehicle of Le Gassick sustained a wound to
the head," said Wrensch.
She said one of the robbers apparently hijacked a man, offloading
gravel at his home, while fleeing the police.
The man later told police he was held at gunpoint.
The robber apparently jumped out of the vehicle near the National

Charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances were
withdrawn on Friday against one man, while a high court indictment was
served on his two co-accused.
The three men appeared in the Pretoria district court following the
murder of a Lynnwood Manor woman, Kathy Odendaal, in October last
year.
According to the 15 charges on the indictment, the two remaining
accused were also linked to several other crimes in that area during
the same period.
They will plead on these charges once their case is transferred to the
Pretoria High Court.
Aged 23 and 29 respectively, the suspects from Mamelodi West are
charged with housebreaking and theft on 12/13 October 2007 in Lynnwood
Glen.
On October 13 they allegedly murdered one Mavhungu Wilson Mapadahanya
in the same suburb.
Also on that day robbers broke into Musa Ebrahim's Lynnwood Manor
home. He was robbed of a laptop at gunpoint.
In his home with him were Nadia Ebrahim, Matthias Dessien, Shaleida
Sadec and Jameela Ebrahim. They were all robbed while being threatened
with firearms, while the attackers also tried to drag Ms Ebrahim
through a broken window.
During this attack, three-year-old Alphiner Ndalana, daughter of the
Ebrahim's domestic worker, was injured when she was hit by a bullet.
Three days later Kathy Odendaal was overpowered at her home in the
same street. She died after she was stabbed several times with an
unknown object and strangled.
The woman was robbed of cellphones, car keys, jewellery and lip ice.
When the attackers fled, they allegedly also fired a shot at Zonkile
Johannes Sithole.
In addition the two accused are charged with being in the illegal
possession of firearms and ammunition.
Their case was postponed to May 28 for a high court date. - Sapa

The KwaZulu-Natal arts community is reeling in shock after the death
of a Pietermaritzburg artist on Monday night.
Police Superintendent Henry Budhram said Gabisile Nkosi, 34, was found
dead at her home with a bullet wound to her head. The body of her
boyfriend, Nqubili Ngidi, was also found.
Budhram said Ngidi had entered the house through the roof and had
killed Nkosi before turning the gun on himself.
"Both had gunshot wounds to the heads and a 9mm pistol was found," he
said.
Nkosi, a print-maker, had exhibited her work in England, the US,
Botswana and Namibia. She was a programme manager at the Caversham
Centre for Artists and Writers.
Nkosi's mentor, Malcolm Christian, said: "It is such a terrible loss.
Even Oprah Winfrey has one of her works."
Police are also investigating the motive behind a double murder and
suicide at Phoenix on Monday night. A man shot and killed his
girlfriend and her 3three-year-old son before killing himself.

Controversial IT businessman Muziwendoda Kunene, who was linked to the
ANC's hoax email saga, will soon face a murder charge in the Free
State circuit court at Harrismith after appearing in court on
Wednesday.
State prosecutor Wessel van Biljon said Kunene appeared in the Kestell
magistrate's court and the matter was postponed to July 2 for a date
in the High Court.
Kunene, with two other men, face several other charges related to the
disappearance of Balito estate agent Lynne Hume.
These are robbery with aggravating circumstances, fraud and
kidnapping.
Kunene would remain in custody at the Kroonstad Prison Centre.
Earlier this year, Kunene pleaded guilty in the Pretoria magistrate's
court to contravening the Intelligence Services Oversight Act.
This followed an agreement he entered with the State.
He was sentenced to three months imprisonment suspended for three
years, provided he was not convicted of contravening Section 7 of the
Intelligence Services Oversight Act.
Kunene allegedly withheld information about emails aimed at
discrediting senior ANC officials.
The emails allegedly implicated senior ANC members in a conspiracy
against the then ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma, who has since been

The process of securing the Lynnwood Manor community will start on
Monday.
Kevin Gast, spokesperson for the Lynnwood Manor Estate Committee, said
they had received advice from the technical sub-committee at a meeting
on Wednesday.
It had investigated the cost and procedures to close off the suburb.
The Pretoria High Court earlier granted residents an interim order
allowing them to close off access streets pending a main application.
In it they will ask the court to review and set aside the council's
rejection of an application to turn the suburb into a gated community.
This came after a spate of crimes in Lynnwood Manor, including the
murder of Cathy Odendaal and the rape of two women earlier this week.
Gast on Thursday said the procedure to secure the area would take
place in three phases. First all entry and exit points would be
controlled, then the perimeter fence around Manor Estate would be
upgraded and lastly internal security would be improved.
"It will be almost like Fort Knox," he said, adding: "We've had
substantial contributions from the whole area. What is so amazing is
that everyone contributed. There is a great cohesive force among the
residents."
The first step would be securing Farnham and Ringwood streets with
gates and manned booms.
"The contractor is starting on Monday. We should have 50 percent of
phase 1 completed by next Thursday," Gast said.
Referring to the pending court case, he said they were confident that
the court would rule in residents' favour, saying they had adhered to
the letter of the law.
"But at the same time we are not going to be dictated to by politics.
This is about safety. Not only the safety of the 700 to 1 000
residents, but also of workers like domestics.
Eventually we will be in radio contact with residents and intend to
extend that to surrounding suburbs so we can spread the collaboration
and security among residents," he said.
Freedom Front Plus (FFP) councillor Conrad Beyers said it was a matter
of life or death for residents in the Lynnwood area.
He said that they could not afford to wait for a court case or the
Tshwane Metro Council before they started securing themselves.
He said residents "should not waste any more time" before they started
implementing safety measures.
Beyers suggested that suburbs fighting to get permission to become
gated communities should establish "smart street closures", which he
said worked perfectly in some areas.
He did not want to disclose which areas, fearing the council would
clamp down on them.
"Busy streets are left open during the day. But from 8pm, communities
erect safety barriers with guards and remove them the next morning.
"Crime levels have dropped significantly in these areas and the city
council's moratorium on safety neighbourhoods are effectively
sidestepped," Beyers added.
He said time had been wasted for years while communities fought to
secure their areas.
"I don't say put up permanent gates. It is temporary until the court
and the council give clarity on the issue.
"While waiting for this, people are still being attacked," he said.
Gast also believed their intended security measures would curb crime.
He said they have to keep criminals out of the area. By making it
difficult to enter the suburb, crimes could not be committed so
easily.

Wildlife authorities on Wednesday issued a stern warning to the public
to stay away from a hippo spotted cavorting along Ballito's
shorebreak.
KwaZulu-Natal Ezemvelo spokesperson Jeff Gaisford said: "A bite from a
hippo is usually fatal to a human being".
The animal had been spotted in Richards Bay and other areas over the
past two weeks.
Gaisford said the animal had been spotted at Ballito on Tuesday but by
Wednesday morning had left the area and was believed to be headed
north.
"We have been tracking it and we just hope it goes back to where it
came from," he said.
He warned bathers and beach goers to stay far away from the hippo.
"If you leave it alone, it will leave you alone because if it doesn't
like you, it will attack," he said.
Meanwhile, a leopard that attacked a tourist last week has still not
been found.
The tourist had been having a braai when he was attacked at the
Umfolozi Game Park.
He sustained bite wounds to the head but was stabilised in hospital.
"Even if we find it, it would be difficult to determine if it was the
same leopard," Gaisford said.
He said there had been no leopards around the campside since the

A Durban taxi owner was shot dead and his passenger wounded on a busy
road near Durban's Reservoir Hills area, police said on Wednesday.

Corolla on the M19 on Tuesday when the incident took place.
"Fourteen shots were fired at him and it was unclear whether the

reportedly in a stable condition in hospital.
