Afrikaanssprekende studente aan die Universiteit van Pretoria (UP) het
gister 'n protesoptog gehou teen die "doelbewuste en geleidelike
afskaffing van Afrikaanse onderrig" aan die universiteit.
Mnr. Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg, voorsitter van die studenteraad en
leier van die protesaksie, het gesê Afrikaans sprekende studente kan
slegs in 19 van die 150 studierigtings wat die UP voorgraads aanbied,
ál hul klasse in Afrikaans loop. Volgens hom skep die UP-bestuur 'n
wanvoorstelling, want studente betaal vir Afrikaanse onderrig, maar kry
dit dan nie.
Die UP se veiligheidsdienste het gesê sowat 700 studente het aan die
optog deelgeneem. Hulle het luid verskeie Afrikaanse volksliedjies, die
ou vlaglied en "Die stem" gesing.
Die studente eis die onmiddellike staking van die verengelsing van
klasse en dat klasse in Afrikaans aangebied word waar dit moontlik is.
Dit kom ná Afrikaanse klasse in die fakulteit ingenieurs wese onlangs
drasties verminder is.
Verder dring die studente aan op 'n komitee om die UP se taalbeleid te
monitor en die aanstelling van genoegsame en bekwame personeellede om
Afrikaanse onderrig te verseker.
"Daar sal van tyd tot tyd Afrikaanse programme aan die universiteit
wees waar 'n student sekere modules in Engels sal moet neem. Dit is
daaraan te wyte dat die universiteit nie oor die hulpbronne en geld
beskik om volledig alle modules in alle programme te dupliseer nie,"
het prof. Niek Grové, registrateur, gesê.
Grové het ook gevra dat 'n ernstige nasionale debat gevoer word oor
Afrikaans, oor meertaligheid binne hoër onderwys en die finansiering
van instellings wat meer as een onderrigtaal gebruik. Hy het gesê die
universiteit doen 'n beroep op die regering om bykomende hulpbronne
beskikbaar te stel om universiteite te ondersteun om meertaligheid te
bevorder.
Mnr. Barend Uys, voorsitter van Solidariteit Jeug aan die UP, het
gesê: "Ons voer steeds gesprekke met die universiteitsbestuur, maar
dit is duidelik dat druk van studente en eksterne groepe nou
noodsaaklik is."
Studente beweer ook dat Afrikaanse studente makliker uit koshuise
geskors word as ander studente. Hulle eis 'n staking van die "eensydige
verandering aan die UP se tradisies" en 'n plasingsbeleid wat gegrond
is op meriete en deelname, pleks van ras.
