Hello,

My name is Carolyn Moore. I am a university student currently
enrolled in an Afrikaans class. I have spent some time in South
Africa before so I've had some first hand experience with the peoples
and cultures of South Africa but I would like to know some individual
views and perceptions of the Afrikaans language. I would appreciate
any feedback you can give me on this subject to the following:

Carolyn Moore_@_STRM_L...@STREAM.COM

With sincere thanks,

Carolyn Moore

Dear Carolyn:

If Afrikaans was more appreciated as a language in Southern Africa, and not
'dissed' by the adversaries of the former government, it would always be
the best 'tool' for Europeans and other African countries to use as a
continental 'patois'.

When speaking some South Africans years ago, [English perhaps] they
derided Afrikaans as a 'dialect' and were hell-bent on not appreciating
it, and telling others that it was a 'dying' language best not learned.

Obviously anti-Apartheid/ Afrikaner ideology in America and all over (c/o
the Sanctions) has dimmed many a view on the scion of the 'Cape Dutch'.
Afrikaans actually was in some conflict thru the 1800's with 'proper'
Dutch speakers, but then until 1933 when the first Bible (Bybel) was
published, fully translated, it really took hold and of course has a wider
literature today.

You might also keep your eye on the Web Site for 'Nasionale Pers'
(Afrikaans Press) which has links to the Van Schaik's Bookstore in
Johannesburg.
Van Schaik's web site can be used for browsing and ordering and new titles
in Afrikaans are highlighted there.

A major Afrikaans language site is called "Die Knoop" ["The Knot"] and can
be accessed at:

I would suggest that you hang around the Afrikaans newsgroup, and/or also
subscribe to the fairly active Afrikaans mailing list. You can do this by
sending an e-mail message consisting of the single line:

subscribe afrikaans

to list...@unseen.aztec.co.za

If you post questions to either the newsgroup or the mailing list, I'm
sure you'll get plenty of responses.
