What is:

"n'Bek soos dit kort net jam"

in English ?

My own translation makes no sense ...

kort = short / briefly
net = just / only / exact / neat / tidy
jam = I have no idea, think it might be related to the word "sorry"

*sigh* I guess I need to practice harder

Thanking you in advance,

Paul

When someone says something that you agree with or like you can say "'n Bek
soos dit kort net jam."

'n Bek = A mouth
soos = like
dit = that
kort = needs
net = only
jam = jam (Something sweet made of fruit and sugar to spread on breads or to
eat with a teaspoon)

So what you are saying is that "n'Bek soos dit kort net jam" is an
Afrikaaner saying ? No wonder I was struggling to make sense of it ! Thanks
a lot, guys.

Incidentally, my dictionary gives the translation of "jam" as "konfyt" or
"gedrang".

The word "jam" is of course the English word for the Afrikaans
word "konfyt." (or, in the case of a "traffic jam," I guess one
could use the word "gedrang," but you probably will hear
"verkeersophoping" rather than "verkeersgedrang.")
The expression " 'n Bek soos dit kort net jam" is of course
a totally slang expression and would not be used in proper
Afrikaans. The word "bek" is a pejorative expression for the
word "mond" (mouth), unless it is used for an animal.
Note that you spell " 'n bek" with the apostrophe in front
of the -n- instead of following it. It is because 'n was
originally "een" in Dutch, but was shortened to 'n in
Afrikaans.
Leer jy Afrikaans?

Gloudina,

I am learning Afrikaans, but sadly it is all self taught, as no one speaks
it here except for ex-pat S.Africans. I have a friend in S.A. and she sends
me occasionally cryptic messages in Afrikaans which I struggle to understand
... so I have read a few books and can read a little Afrikaans now. Slang
completely throws me, of course, hence my confusion. My main problem really
is pronunciation, because do not have the opportunity to hear spoken
Afrikaans.

BTW, My dictionary does not say "bek" is pejorative, merely an alternative
to "mond"

Thanks

Paul

Post a telephone number here...

To everyone:
So you want to make a phone call overseas, but it costs too much going
through Telkom? Well your problems are over... I recently took a walk up Sea
Point Main Road and visited 5 iCafes (more later) which are reviewed on my
site... anyway the first one I visited (Computer Junction) was very
helpful... Dave told me I can call an ordinary telephone via the Internet (I
didn't know this)... the URL you need to go to is here:
http://www.hottelephone.com/

You just need a sound card, speakers & microphone (or headphone / microphone
combo)... and you can make FREE phone calls to over 30 different countries
via the Net... and apparently the voice quality is like face to face
talking...

So Paul, if you post your tel number here, maybe I will phone you and speak
some Afrikaans to you... I am an English speaker, but I can also speak good
Afrikaans....

[ Despite what I said before.... I love all you lovely people here... :-) ]

Well, just be careful when you use the word "bek" as an alternative
to "mond." I assume you know the common Afrikaans expression
"Hou jou bek" for "Shut up."

Why don't you write in simple Afrikaans, and give us permission
to correct you. That way we can turn this newsgroup into something
useful.

Waar bly jy in Engeland?

Hallo Danielle! Naturally, I don't literally live *with* that
pigeon-chested, stuttering fop, but I am only a 10 min walk away from the
street market shown in the movie (which, incidentally, Americans do not
believe really exists). And besides, my personal habits are nowhere near as
disgusting as the aforementioned Spike LOL

Ek was verlede jaar met Nuwe Jaar in London, en het n draai
in Notting Hill gegooi. Die strate is vol toeriste op soek na Hugh Grant,
en die straatventers (street vendors) is almal van ander lande, meesal
Portugal dink ek. Die plek het n lekker vibe . . . klein dorpie
gevoel in n groot stad . . . baie mooi ou semi-detached huisies met
interessante tuintjies, maar ook baie seedy huise wat lyk of hulle
rooi ligte by die voordeur sal hang, Walle styl. Nogtans n plek
waar ek nogal sou wou woon.

OK .. here is my Translation For The Day :

"I was in London last year at the New Year, and ?? turn in Notting Hill ???.
The streets are full of tourists looking for Hugh Grant, and the street
vendors are all foreigners, usually from Portugal I think. The place has a
sweet (nice?) vibe ... a small village feeling in a big city ... very nice
semi detached houses with interesting little gardens, yet also very seedy
houses what look like they should have red lights hanging by the front door
(!!), ?Walle? style. Nevertheless a place where I'd like to live."

How'd I do guys ?

For your information, the shitty area of Notting Hill is *NOT* filled with
brothels. They are crack-houses, OK ?

draaigooi, om 'n draai te gooi = to visit briefly
(draai = turn. Om die draai = around the bend
Ek draai om = I turn around
Ek het omgedraai
Ek sal omdraai

Ek gooi 'n draai
Ek het 'n draai gegooi
Ek sal 'n draai gooi
Ek sou 'n draai gooi
Ek wou 'n draai gooi

Ah .... the word "gooi" is defined as to "throw, cast, fling" by my book. No

dis beter om in die laatsomer te gaan, na die skole eers begin het. Die
