What does the word "Afrikaans" mean. Sorry if I sound dumb but I'm just
curious. I work for the newspaper and saw an article about that. I
guess it's a class of people. I don't know, someone please help.

Just another point of view:
As Afrikaner (and more so, a South African) I believe people define
themselves - rather than BE defined by others. This was the case in our
country's sad history, and many people still have that habit it seems.
Many people of various skin color - other than white - also call themselves
Afrikaners.
