At the age of 5 a child questions only his immediate surrounding. "What
colour is that, mommy?" "What does that mean, daddy?"
A young tender mind does not question political ideology or military
strategies. These things are unimportant. A child accepts what he sees for
what it is, no questions asked. Like that 'unconditional love' that we are
all so in love with.

This young, tender mind enters primary school. It does not question why
there are only white kids in his class. It does not question why all the
teachers are white. It does not question why nobody has black neighbors or
why it never sees a black man driving a BMW. It does not question why blacks
have to sit on different train carriages or why nobody ever has a black
girlfriend or boyfriend. It just accepted what it sees because that's the
way it is. These young minds are then exposed to the scrutiny of an
educational system that looks only after it's own. It is made clear to that
young mind, that when it finishes secondary school, it's duty would be to
take up arms, deploy in Angola and defend what is his.

These norms are embedded in that tender mind. Once embedded, the mind takes
it for granted. Once taken for granted, the war is almost won.

The child progresses through primary school experiencing what a 7 and 8 and
9 year old child experiences. Drawing energy from his surroundings, playing
rugby, learning and just having a wholesome childhood. Still not
questioning, still only accepting. Maybe because nobody ever frowns and
verbalizes the contradiction. But instead, the segregation is enforced,
unquestioned and unopposed.

The tender mind turns 13 and enters the brave new world of secondary school.
Suddenly bigger and broader concepts needs to be evaluated through
experience. Adapting has to take place, fast. Furiously the now adolescent
mind seeks to relate. It befriends minds that experience this brave new
world in a similar way.

These masses of adolescent minds' racial complacency now becomes a weapon of
a government that has embarked on a campaign that is globally opposed and
condemned.
These adolescent white minds now needs to be focused. Prepared.

While their young counterparts in Europe are taught the importance of
condoms and voorbehoedmiddels, they are taught what anti-personnel landmines
look like and how to identify them. PW Botha has declared a state of
Emergency, Sasol burns down. Pretoria is bombed, Soweto riots and Stompie is
necklaced.

The adolescent minds feel threatened, scared, but too indoctrinated to
realize that what is happening, is inevitable.

Boys at the age of 18 suffer from an immortality complex. Then those minds
are finally ripe and on February 6, thousands of minds klaar in at Nasreq.
1-SAI Bloemfontein awaits.

Now adolescents will be expelled, replaced by raw, murdering adrenaline. The
innocent, tender mind receives it's final, backbreaking onslaught . . .

"Skiet die vocken kaffer" shouts kaptein Le Roux. The Bulldog sways lightly
as the LMG vomits it's death warrants. Tracers punch defenseless corrugated
iron shacks. Ripping roofs off. Exposing the occupants to their premature
destination.

A lifetime of blind, but willing, belief in the Groot Trek, Dingaan's
defiance of Piet Retief, Bloed Rivier, British Imperialism, concentration
camps, Die Stem, Die Voortrekker Monument, but most of all the 16th December
fuels the stifling need for independence.

Finally, February 1994 arrives. The ANC disbanded.

With it came freedom of press and scrutiny of past horrors. The truth is at
last objectively presented to the young, adolescent and indoctrinated minds.
Everything they believed in, held near and dear, lived for, died for, hoped
for, is suddenly WRONG. Fundamentally WRONG.
