During the second part of the Truth Commission's life span,
its work has unexpectedly taken a new and chilling direction.
..At last the commission has enough evidence that missing
activists were interrogated, tortured, killed and buried on farms
all over the country, says the head of the investigative unit,
Dumisa Ntsebeza.
In the beginning, the only farm we knew about was Vlakplaas.
Then it came to light that similar farms existed in the old Natal,
the Transvaal, the Orange Free State, and the Eastern Cape...
"What emerges is a clear pattern with its roots in the theaters
of war in our neighbouring countries. Well-known Rhodesian
activists disappeared in the areas where the Selous Scouts were
active. The first disappearances on a regular basis in South Africa
happened shortly after the independence of Zimbabwe. And the
commission has evidence that not only the police, but also the
South African Defence Force, was involved in these farms...
