Recalling that promotional on TOON for "Dexter's Laboratory" amounting
essentially to a mini-cartoon (what with Dee-Dee ruining another of
Dexter's experiments, forcing Dexter to call his usual parts
source)--not to mention its potential permutations for combining the
English-language prompt with another language (Spanish being the one in
use on the advert)--leaves me to imagine what it would be like if he
were given the prompts in English and Afrikaans (the latter the Rodney
Dangerfield of languages, as it were, especially given its unsavoury
past vis-a-vis the apartheid regime):

"Hi--you have reached the Big Expensive Parts Line! [Hi--jy het bereik
die Groot Duure Dele Lyn!]

"To proceed in English, press one. Om in Afrikaans te voortgaan, druk
twee."

[DEXTER presses for the Afrikaans option.]

"Jy het aangedui dat jy wat wens word om in Afrikaans te voortgaan. As
dat is regmaak, druk een; indien nie, druk twee."

[DEXTER confirms his selecting the Afrikaans option.]

"Jy het aangedui dat ons was in aanvaar jy wat wens word om in Afrikaans
te voortgaan. As dat is regmaak, druk een; indien nie, druk twee."

[DEXTER, by now looking impatient, makes clear he DID want to proceed in
Afrikaans.]

"Asseblief vashou." [Background music being something on the order of
Afrikaner folk music and ballads, in Afrikaans for the most part.]

At least I WAS able to bring in some variety to the "Dexter's
Laboratory" promo in question by suggesting an Afrikaans-language option
to such an advert as this....

I dare not think what Dexter and Dee Dee sound like in German, but it
would be interesting to hear.. now, that that's said, let's get some
lunch!

I hope the "gene" instead of "geen" in the Afrikaans is a typo. TheDutch
and Afrikaans words are the same here.

In reply:

Afrikaans happens to have its origins in Middle Dutch (i.e., the Dutch
language as was spoken in the 17th and 18th centuries, when the Cape of
Good Hope colony was first being settled), and is, in fact, Middle Dutch
for "African."

Additionally, Afrikaans has elements of the likes of German, French
Huguenot dialects, Hindi and traces of English throughout. In fact,
linguists will oft like to consider Afrikaans as a simplified form of
Dutch and/or German.

A good website to refer to is http://www.afrikaans.com/, which happens
to be a website for an Afrikaans-language journal in South Africa as
discusses die Afrikaans taal.
