I'm in a "book club" (group of people who one book per month, then
meet to discuss it), and this month we're
reading a story ("Burger's Daughter", by Nadine Gorrimer)
that mainly takes place in South Africa. It uses some vocabulary
that the average American reader (like me) doesn't know.

Could some South-African fill in rough definitions for these?

I'll then xerox the responses, and hand them out to my group
(meets tomorrow (wednesday) night).

THANKS!

---- Here they are:

B O S S (secret police?)

Broederbond

boerewors

coloured (the specific definition for South Africans)

doek

dorp

kaffertjie

kaffir

kaffir-boetie

mealies (roast mealies)

stoep

veld

veldskoen

volk

---- And maybe some of these are South African too:

baize

kaross

pantechnion

rondavel

In case no one comes through, you will find two Afrikaans-English
dictionaries at the site "A Web of On-line Dictionaries"

Secret organisation that originated in the 1920's after the Afrikaners
were disposessed of economic power by the Anglo Boer war and lost
their independent republics.
It was started to support Afrikaners regaining some economic and
political clout.
People who were seen as good candidates were invited to join. Meetings
were in secret and membership was secret as well.
They essentially stuck together and helped each other.
As the Afrikaner grew in power the Broederbond became more and more
powerfull.
In the apartheid days it was not only the think tank of the govt but
in a sense also a govt within a govt as most of the ruling National
Party's (if not all) office bearers were members.
These days they are stripped of political power but still rule
Afrikaner corporate life.

They mainly speak Afrikaans.
White Afrikaners have close blood relations with them.
The language Afrikaans probably originated with them.
They are mainly Christian but also represents one of the big Muslim

By the way, the main character of Burgers Daughter is based on the
daughters of Bram Fischer an Afrikaner who was leader of the SA
Communist Party in the 60's and early 70's.
He was sentenced to jail wher he died in the early 80's.
He was from a prominent Afrikaner family and was by all accounts a
brilliant man.
A good biography of Fischer was written by Stephen Clingman who is now
at the university of Boston.

I smell trouble brewing among the lower orders. Would any of
you Afrikaners be interested in hearing some Van der Ryerson
jokes from my huge stock?

One should add here that it was a secret society among mainlyAfrikaners,
aimed at the strengthening of Afrikaner society.
After the election of the National Party in 1948 it started exerting
a tight grip on appointments in the civil service and at universities.

Come on, Pat. Good Boerewors is surely characterized by the goodground
meat in it. To liken it to a hot dog is surely a travesty.

"Kaffer" comes from the Arabic "Kafir" meaning non-moslem,infidel. Was
then brought to Africa by the Moslems and later
on applied to all black people in Africa.

A "kaffer-boetie" is a derogatory term used by racists in South-Africato
denote a person whose sympathies are with the black people. The
word "boetie" is a dimunitive form of "broer" (brother.)

From our American Heritage Dictionary: " A cotton or woolenmaterial
napped to imitate felt, often bright green in colour, and
used chiefly as a cover for gaming tables. (French "baie"..)

It is interesting to see that English speaking South Africansuse the
original Dutch spelling "rondavel" when they write
about this particular sort of building. (In Afrikaans it is
spelt "rondawel.") The fact that the building is round is the
most important feature of it. But more often than not it has
a thatched roof. In the olden days quite a number of tribes
built their dwellings in the form of rondawels. Modern
rondawels are frequently found in Game Parks etc.
