Uit die argiewe van die Globe and Mail, Oct. 22:
100 years ago:
On Oct. 22, 1899. the Globe reported that a British
force from Ladysmith had engaged the Boers under
the command of General Jan Kock and inflicted a
crushing defeat on them, capturing the general who
later died of his wounds. A message was received
from Colonel Baden-Powell in Mafeking saying the
Boers were surrounding him but he hoped to hold
out. A Major Scott, in command of a police unit at
Vryburg, shot himself after being forced to surrender
the town to the Boers.
