Former Afrikaans rugby broadcaster Gerhard Viviers died this morning
from cancer. With his exceptional voice and style of radio broadcasting
he brought more than 50 rugby tests into the lounges of many South
Africans in the era before TV.
The Golden Voice was silenced for the first time a few years back when
his vocal cords had to be removed due to cancer. Recently the cancer
spread to his oesophagus and this finally silenced the great character.
Who will ever forget him shouting 'Siddie, Siddie, Siddie!' when Syd
Nomis scored one of his test tries.
Although best known for his rugby broadcasts, Gerhard tried his hand at
several others. Probably his biggest monument is the creation of a full
Afrikaans cricket vocabulary, which IMO played a significant role in
promoting that sport amongst Afrikaans people.
We salute one of the great characters of the game.

Oeps! Na die verkeerde ng gestuur, vandaar die Ingels!
Hoe dit ook al sy, 'n groot karakter binne die Afrikaanse gemeenskap is
nie meer met ons nie, en word môre begrawe.
Ek sien die draers gaan Frik du Preez, Mof Myburgh, Piston van Wyk, Jan
Ellis, Syd Nomis en Piet Uys wees.
