Hi Peter,

I suggest you start with REAL DUTCH first, you're in England, and it would be

easy to find a REAL DUTCH person in your area ! After you know THE REAL thing,

it's easy to pick up on DIALECTS ! Or better still, come live and work in the

FRIENDLY AND SAFE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS ! Greetings from Holland, Patrick

Jammer ou vriend maar jy maak 'n fout. Afrikaans is 'n taal in eie reg wat
vir 300 jaar sy eie pad geloop het. Die advies wat jy gee is verkeerd. (As
jy konsekwent wil wees in jou redenasie moet jy Nederlands as 'n dialek van
Duits beskou.

Suid Afrika (Namibië ook) verstaan Afrikaans as tweede of derde taal.

Groete

(jou k l e i n...k l e i n ....k l e i n...nefie!)

André

To Peter

Afrikaans speaking people are friendly and proud of their language and they
would love to teach you Afrikaans. Don't take Patrick seriously ... he is
confused! There are tens of thousands of Afrikaans speaking people in
London and all over England. They would love to teach you Afrikaans.

Patrick gave you the wrong advice - the average person in South Africa
won't understand you if you speak Dutch. It is the same as teaching
somebody English of the "Stone Age Era" and to expect modern day people in
the USA to understand them when they speak.

It would of course be best to come to South Africa and learn Afrikaans first
hand. It is a very simple language (unlike Dutch) but very powerful in
terms of expression.

Good Luck!

"Groete" (greetings)

praat!Hier's iets in Engels:

Afrikaans, the world's youngest language, had its origins in Europe yet
was nurtured and grew to full maturity on African soil. Afrikaans is unique
as it is the only language of Germanic origin which is spoken exclusively
outside Europe.
The main part of the Afrikaans vocabulary was derived from Dutch although
the Afrikaners have added a wide variety of new coinages to their
language particularly farming terms and words dealing with hunting and life
in the veld. Many words are borrowed from Malay, Portuguese, Hottentot,
German, French, English and the African languages making Afrikaans a rich
and flexible language.
Afrikaans is the mother tongue of 60% of South Africa's white population and
of nearly 90% of the coloured people making a total of three million
speakers.
