INVESTIGATE, DON'T COVER UP: MAIL & GUARDIAN (EDITOR: PHILIP VAN
NIEKERK), 20001117, P.24 (A) - One of the more disturbing habits the ANC
has inherited from its predecessor is the art of obscuring incidents of
impropriety and indiscretion behind official inquiries. The current
parliamentary investigation into former mineral and energy affairs
minister Penuell Maduna for his attack on former auditor general Henri
Kluever exemplifies this pattern. It is now more than four years since
Maduna said in the National Assembly that Kluever had been party to the
cover-up of the theft of R170m of oil. In January this year, after
spending R30m investigating, the public protector cleared Kluever and
passed the baton to Parliament, recommending it consider sanctioning the
minister. A special committee in the National Assembly was duly
assembled. But it has since lurched from postponement to red herring,
fumbling over what is a strikingly simple exercise. Preposterously,
Maduna remains unscathed, having been promoted to minister of justice.

Ja, die land van die lang wit wolk, die land waar dit meeste van die tyd
reën, volgens my informante. Ek kyk
nou die dag weer na die film "The
Piano," en die hele aksie gebeur in
die modder. (Wat 'n wonderlike film!
Jane Campion dink ek het die Oscar
gekry as beste direkteur. En Paquin,
die dogtertjie (gebore in Kanada)
die Oscar vir best supporting acctress.)
