I finally found an old posting from Andrew Harwood
(living in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada). In it is a wealth
of information for people wanting to learn Afrikaans.
(I can remember somebody from Kansas responding
with more information, but I cannot find the file.
Maybe he can repeat it, if he is still on the newsgroup.)
Anyway, here is Andrew's information. I hope he does
not mind me repeating it.
"If you have (as a web browser) either Netscape
Navigator 3.0 or Microsoft Internet Explorer,
version 2.0 AND if your web browser is Java enabled
(for Java applets) you can subscribe to a free online
Afrikaans course at
http://www.studyonline.com
Note: the course is free of charge, but it uses language
flash cards based upon a Java applet."
Andrew also passes on the following web site that
Antonie found:
http://pathfinder.com/@@ctDRVgQAMGt3euLI/travel/language
Andrew then gives the name of a bookstore in
Cambridge, MA that carries Afrikaans books and
language tapes. It is called SCHOENHOF's Foreign
Bookstore. Their web site is:
http://www.schoenhofs.com
Just click under "languages"...for more information you
can call Schoenhof's Bookstore at (617) 547-8855.
This is the list of books Andrew found on the list
of the Bookstore.
(1) Language 30 Afrikaans (Audio-forum) tapes.
Price: $21.95
(2) Teach yourself Afrikaans (National Textbook Co.)
$16.95
(3) Bosman. Afrikaans/English School Dictionary
Price $29.95 (Nasionale Pers)
(4) Bosman. Tweetalige (bilingual) Woordeboek
Price not given. Publisher Tafelberg.
(5) Conversaphone Afrikaans Language Course in
one cassette. Price $9.98
(6) Donaldson B. Grammar of Afrikaans
Publisher Walter de Gruyter Inc. Price $175.00
(7) Groenewald D.P. "Learn to speak Afrikaans."
Publisher Shuter and Shooter. Price $8.95.
Andrew recommends this book. It begins by
using words that are the same in both English
and Afrikaans. From my years in South Africa
I also recognize the publisher as being in Natal
and suspect that the book was written to teach
English speaking South Africans Afrikaans.
(8) G. Holloway : Painless Afrikaans (Juta) $13.95
(9) Kritzinger : Afrikaans/Eng. Dictionary
Hippocrene Books. $11.95
(10) Krizenger : Groot Woordeboek (Van Schaik)
$59.95
(11) Kritzinger : Skoolwoordeboek Afr/Eng (Van Schaik)
$29.95
It continually amazes me how many people outside
South Africa are in the process of learning Afrikaans.
I wish those people would make postings on the news-
group; in English or Dutch, if they feel insecure about
their Afrikaans. But why not also test out your ability
to write in Afrikaans, however minimal your Afrikaans
is at the moment. There will always be people to help
you.
