Black Journalists' Forum unjustified : SAHRC
April 08, 2008, 11:15
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has found that the
blacks-only membership of the Forum of Black Journalist (FBJ) is
unjustified and unconstitutional.
The HRC says that while voluntary associations are not
unconstitutional, the FBJ's blanket exclusion of white journalists
from membership is not justified.
It has recommended that the FBJ revisit and amend its policies, and
until then should desist from excluding membership on the sole basis
of race. The parties have 45 days to appeal the findings.
Forum barred white journalists
News Editor for Talk Radio 702 and 94.7 Highveld Stereo, Katy
Katopodis, lodged a complaint with the Commission after the Forum
barred white journalists from attending an off-the-record address by
newly-elected ANC president Jacob Zuma in February.
Katopodis argued that the issue in question was not the right to form
an organisation of black journalists, but rather the exclusion of
white journalists committed to the achievement of equality.
Chairperson of the Forum's Steering Committee, Abbey Makoe, argued the
association was aimed at redressing inherent past imbalances which
affected black journalists.
