Cape Town - Eskom on Wednesday warned that it is experiencing a
higher than expected demand for electricity which can largely be
ascribed to the current heatwave.
In addition there has also been a number of unplanned outages of
generating units, Eskom said in a statement.
It warned that if there are any further unplanned outages or a further
increase in demand, the possibility of load shedding increases.
"We appeal to the South African consumers to switch off non-essential
electrical equipment such as air-conditioning, geysers and swimming
pool pumps in order to reduce the demand of electricity and to assist
in minimising load shedding," said Jacob Maroga, Eskom's Managing
Director (Transmission Division).
Eskom said it will provide regular updates.

Blackout risk high - Eskom

Cape Town - Eskom on Thursday reissued a power alert, warning it is
experiencing a temporary shortage of power on the national system due
to outages at a number of generating units and an increase in the
demand for electricity.
The power utility, however, said the national system remains stable,
but tight.
It warned that the risk for load shedding on Thursday was high due to
increased unplanned outages of generating units overnight.
Eskom said it is doing everything to minimise the inconvenience to
customers. The load shedding programme will be communicated on a
regional basis and implemented in an equitable manner across the
country.
It reiterated an appeal to all consumers to use electricity
sparingly.
"We appeal to consumers to use electrical equipment such as air-
conditioning, geysers and swimming pool pumps as efficiently as
possible in order to reduce the demand of electricity and to assist in
minimising load shedding," said Eskom's Jacob Maroga.
He said Eskom teams are working continuously to return the units that
are on unplanned outages, back to service.
