I recently received the following e-mail message in Afrikaans from
someone in South Africa. Unfortunately I don't have access to an
Afrikaans dictionary or I could probably piece together the meaning
myself. What little I have been able to "translate" doesn't appear too
friendly. I'm particularly interested in what a "bliksim" is. :-)
Could someone help me with a rough tranlation of this? Hopefully it's
nothing offensive. My apologies if it is.

" I say bro why haven't you written. It seems to me that if I don't write
to you that you dont write to me. Typical American behaviour. You think
the whole world must be in your country. You bastard!"
I'm sorry but this was baie rude!

I would like to thank the individuals who answered my request for a
translation by sending me an e-mail reply. You have been most kind and
understanding.
Sincerely,

"Bliksem" is one of those words which is unique to Afrikaans and
doesn't REALLY have an English equivalent.
"Bastard", "Scumbag", "Shit-house", "Arse-wipe" etc, etc all carry a
somewhat derogatory implication. "Bliksem" is more a teasing term of
endearment including a meaning of reprimand.

I say, my bro(ther), why do you never write? It looks to me if I don't write
then you won't either. Typical American behaviour, you think the world is
your country, not so? You lightning-bolt!
