A Handful of Keys benefit tour

If you have friends in Sydney or London, encourage them to book for A
Handful of Keys.

Not only will they have a great evening, but they will help to save the life
of little Oscar von Memerty.

Oscar and his sister Valeska were born with MPS 6 (muco polysacharodisis 6)
or Maroteaux Lamy Syndrome. This is a genetic metabolic illness, which
causes all the soft tissues to swell causing massive deformity, dwarfism,
increasing paralysis, loss of motor functions, gradual blindness and
deafness and proves fatal by their late teens.

After a massive fund-raising effort in 1997 both children underwent
unrelated bone marrow transplants in Manchester. Valeska accepted her
transplant but died in August 1998 from transplant complications. Oscar
rejected his transplant.

Because of the huge risks involved, Ian and Viv von Memerty decided to let
the disease take its course, and simply love and support him. But there are
now two new developments which offer hope. The first is a 'lyte' BMT. This
new system, called 'non-ablative' transplants, works very well on metabolic
patients. The second is that donor matching has progressed hugely since
1997. As a result, the rejection process and side effects are a lot less
violent and difficult and the likelihood of losing Oscar is very small.

The Von Memertys have met with the team from Great Ormond Street Children's
Hospital Transplant team (in London) and they are willing to do a 'lyte'
transplant on Oscar, and have located at least one well matched donor.
However, there is down-side - they require an up-front payment of 120 000
pounds. With the money the family have raised, there is a shortfall of about
50,000 pounds, (or at the current exchange rate +/- R 700,000.00).

Because the disease is progressive, the transplant should be done as soon as
possible, certainly before Oscar turns 8.

So, if you have seen and enjoyed A Handful of Keys, tell your friends
overseas. Even if you haven't seen it, 130 000 people can't be wrong. The
show has had nightly standing ovations, it has received nine awards, broken
all box office records and attracted rave reviews.

In Sydney, the venue is Paddington Woollahra RSL Club, 220-232 Oxford
Street, Paddington, Sydney. March 18, Ticket price $50. Book on (2) 9645

In London, The May Fair Theatre, Stratton St, W1. London. From March 31 to

Dis vir my 'n baie hartseer verhaal, het die storie altyd dopgehou in die
media en op tv se Carte Blanche. Ek gaan juis volgende week in Engeland
wees en sou dit baie graag wou ondersteun, maar ek gaan ongelukkig in
Skotland wees, ek sal nietemin die boodskap aan ander vriende aan hierdie
kant van die aardbol oordra!
