Israeli coach under fire after calling US blacks "dummies" and
"slaves"Copyright 2001 by Agence France-Presse (via ClariNet) / Mon, 2 Jul

JERUSALEM, July 2 (AFP) - The coach of Israel's leading basketball team
Maccabi Tel Aviv has been summoned to appear before parliament after
reportedly denouncing his black US players as "dummies" and "slaves," army
radio said.

Pini Gershon, who has coached a number of African-American players at the
European champions, delivered a rant against black players during a speech
to Israeli businessmen that was reported Sunday on an Israeli website.

"There are two shades of blacks. There's the light-skin, who are a lot
smarter than the dark blacks -- those are the real dummies," he was quoted
as saying, according to the Jerusalem Post.

"The dark ones are like slaves: whatever you tell them to do, they'll do
without thinking about it. They usually come from the streets," said
Gershon, who has coached Maccabi Tel Aviv for around 25 years.

The paper said the remarks had first been released on a web site and that
Gershon had tried to play them down, saying that many of his comments had
been "just a joke."

He will be asked to speak to the parliament's committee on violence in
sport, the radio report said.

Maccabi Tel Aviv is the number-one club in the nation. It captured this
year's European SuproLeague title, spurred largely by African-American star
Arriel McDonald.
