Damian, you will get by quite well in English here.
Afrikaans is not a prerequisite to be able to visit.
There are a few words you should know:
Eina ( ay-nah) to use when you are hurt - like bumping your toe on a rock.
Voertsek ( foot-sack) - to chase somebody - animal or human - away that
bothers you.
Vrystaat ( Fray-staht) to shout when you attend any sport.

Almost all South Africans can speak English!
You need to know that you should lock your doors when travelling in a car.
For the rest, go and enjoy yourself in our beautiful country!!!

Hi Damian,
You also need to know that if you are coming here in December, it is
hi malaria season in areas where malaria thrives such as around Kruger
National Park and along the coastal (wetland) areas. Get an up do date
on tropical diseases doctor to give you some antimalarial drugs to
take and you should be just fine. I second Max's caveat about locking
your doors and will add - Do not pick up people on the side of the
road. It's a good idea to carry a cell phone in case you run into car
troubles. It's a fabulous country and I am sure you will enjoy it
immensely.

I know this only too well. I spent some time in Wellington, Paarl and
Stellinbosch - the heart of Cape Afrikaanerdom. Everytime I tried to speak in
Afrikaans (I used to speek it iver fifty years ago) the blighters immediately
replied in English. I spent three weeks in the area and didn't learn anything
:-(
When I go to Flanders (Flemish Belgian) I pick it up more there than I do when
I return to SA.

I know the feeling. Same as when Afrikaners
go to the Netherlands and want to talk in
Afrikaans and they immediately reply in
English.
