Subject: Dawn van Niekerk
Dear members of this NG,
I wonder if you could give me some information which might be useful
for me in trying to help Dawn to be repatriated. As it is now, the
SA government has an exchange treaty ready with Thailand, but the
politicians don't seem to be very interested in signing it. Also,
the SA government and embassy won't sponsor anyone's requests for a
royal pardon, which means all such requests are automatically denied.
As a result, people like Dawn who are sentenced to 40 or more years
have to serve all of them or stay there until they die. We are
pinning our hopes on the SA government agreeing to an exchange treaty,
which would enable Dawn and the others to be transferred to a SA
prison, closer to their families and in infinitely better conditions.
Do you think you could tell me something on the current political
situation in SA today? Do you think it would be counterproductive to
have a campaign on Dawn's case in the national media? Would it perhaps
be better to do so with the other SA prisoners, who - as far as I know -
are all black? Unfortunately I'm not in touch with any of them yet.
Are there still prominent Afrikaans politicians?
Finally, could you give me some linguistic help? How do you say
"Afrikaans society (association, community)" in Afrikaans? This would
help me a lot with internet searches.

As far as I know there isn't any Afrikaans speaking politicians left in our
Cabinet (not any that can make a difference anyway). What you can do is to
go to the media, which will probably be your best hope of getting anything
done. I wouldn't hold my breath though, our government isn't very concerned
with white people and their trials and tribulations. But you can go to all
the newspapers and magazines and post articles on the net. You can even try
to get an interview with the guys from Carte Blanche... (find their website
and contact details on http://www.carteblanche.co.za/ and click on the carte
blanche button) they always seem to get something done when it comes to
things like this, they might be able to help you. Try 3rd degree (also a
talk show) on another station...the url is http://www.etv.co.za Take a look
around their site and maybe you can find someone you can contact regarding
this matter. Other than that I can't be of more assistance to you. If
nothing else you can make the South African public aware of this matter, and
maybe there will be some sort of out cry to the government to do something
about it. You'll never know what can come of an aggresive media campaign.
You wanted to kow what "Afrikaans Society" means in afrikaans? You would
say "Afrikaanse Gemeenskap" although you might have a better result if you
run a search in English, because there isn't a lot of Afrikaans websites out
there.

Thanks a lot for your advice. Actually Dawn isn't the only South
African in prison there, but she's the only Afrikaner (indeed the
only white South African), that's why I only mentioned her case
her. They're also not all in for drugs, but when it comes to
foreigners the sentences they get are always very high.

Marco I have forwarded your message to a few organizations , most in South
Africa . Hopefully some- one able to help will contact you. I cannot believe
that people will just stand by and do nothing for this person.

I will try, but they don't seem to show much interest with
prisoners in Thailand, and in general they seem to ignore
women prisoners more easily than men.
I know this may sound like a very silly idea, but what do
you suppose the Dutch Embassy might be willing to help her?
The SA Embassy wants nothing to do with her, possibly because
of her ethnicity.

Perhaps Amnesty International is not in the business
of trying to get people in prison with criminal records
out of prison. I think they are working in the area of
human rights abuses.
What is the ethnicity of Dawn van Niekerk? Her name
sounds like she is a white Afrikaner to me. Do you want
to imply that the present South African government would
not help her get out of prison because she is white? That
is a serious charge, Mr. de Innocentis.
If the truth be told, Dawn van Niekerk is probably in
prison (and probably waiting for a death sentence) because
of something criminal she did. Western governments
warn their citizens over and over again against the danger
of smuggling drugs in the Far East. And there is pretty
little these western governments can do to help their
citizens once they are convicted. We had a case here in
Canada recently where a younger woman was put to
death in Vietnam accused of taking drugs out of the
country. Her elderly mother was in prison for a long
time, but has since been released. I believe they were
both Canadian landed immigrants.
