Krugersdorp - A disabled man is recuperating in the Krugersdorp
hospital after he suffered serious burns earlier in the week when he
was put into a bath with piping hot water in another hospital in the
area.

They allegedly told him that he "might as well burn to death" - they
"couldn't care less".

Hannes Vorster, 60, was admitted to the Leratong hospital in Kagiso
last week to have his catheter changed.

According to Johan Coetzee, head of the Connie Mulder Centre for the
Multi-disabled in Randfontein, Vorster suffers from muscular dystrophy
and as totally dependent on a wheelchair. He is also mentally
handicapped.

"On Sunday night two black members of the hospital staff took him for
a bath. They put him into a bath filled with piping hot water and he
suffered serious burns on his feet and back," Coetzee said.

"When I told then I was burning, they said I might just as well burn
to death, they couldn't care less," said Vorster.

Paramedics transferred Vorster from the Leratong hospital to the Yusuf
Dadoo hospital in Krugersdorp on Wednesday, where he is being treated
now.

According to the medical report on his hospital bed Vorster was
admitted with burns and infection in his catheter.

"It was shocking to see that his catheter had become septic. In the
Leratong hospital nothing was done to keep it clean," Vorster said.

However, the staff of the Leratong hospital disagrees.

According to Francina Rantsaka, spokesperson for the hospital, Vorster
did not suffer the burns during his stay in the hospital. She said a
doctor had diagnosed the wounds as the result of bad blood circulation
to the limbs.

"The injuries are a medical condition. The patient's allegations
regarding the suffering of burn wounds are not correct," she said. "If
they bring a written complaint, we will investigate the matter."

Coetzee alleges that Vorster did not have the injuries when he was
taken to the Leratong hospital.

"It is shocking to see how the children are ill-treated in the
(Leratong) hospital," he said.

Apparently another inhabitant of the Connie Mulder Centre was recently
also "neglected" in the Leratong hospital when she was not treated for
breathing problems.

According to a paramedic, who prefers to remain anonymous, the
injuries Vorster suffered are burn wounds. He transferred Vorster to
the Yusuf Dadoo hospital. "There are big burn wounds. I have been
around for a long time and I know burns when I see them. There were
definitely blisters on his feet," he said.

Mense vra altyd hoekom is dit so? Die antwoord is omdat dit toegelaat word.

Cheers

Hier by ons in Namibië is 'n staatshospitaal darem self 'n ding waarby jy
wyd verbyloop. Omtrent alles is deur die personeel gesteel.....beddegoed,
kos, ens. Darem staan die geboue nog en die dakke is nog nie afgebreek
nie, alhoewel die lugversorging nie meer so lekker werk nie, ens. ens.
