Pretorians remember Church St

Pretoria - About 30 white South Africans gathered on a Pretoria
sidewalk on Saturday afternoon to honour the victims of a 1983 car
bomb.

The group piled rocks and flowers around a street pole before
observing a silent moment and singing the apartheid-era national
anthem Die Stem.

The wording of a red ribbon among the pile read: "In remembrance of
members of the Boer nation (Boerevolk) who perished".

The gathering was organised by a group of Afrikaner organisations
called the Volksversetaksie (loosely translated as people's resistance
action).

Twenty-one people, including the two bombers, were killed and 217
injured when a car packed with explosives detonated outside the SA Air
Force's then-headquarters in Church Street on May 20, 1983. The
victims were mostly civilians.

The bombing was orchestrated by the African National Congress's armed
wing Umkhonto we Sizwe, then in the midst of an armed struggle against
apartheid.

At least six of those killed were black South Africans.

Organiser Dan Roodt said Saturday's ceremony was aimed at countering
the "current amnesia" about "atrocities" committed by apartheid-era
resistance movements, as well as remembering the casualties.

These included blacks, he said in response to a question. But mourners
kept referring to "our people" and "Boers".

A handful of curious black onlookers circled the gathering, some even
mouthing the words to Die Stem as it was sung vigorously under a new
South African flag fluttering from a nearby mast.
