Idioom: om 'n appeltjie met iemand te skil.
(to reprimand someone in a reasonably good-
natured way.) Literally, to pare an apple in the
presence of somebody.
"Ek wil 'n appeltjie met jou skil. Hoekom vertel
jy aan ander mense dat ek skelm is."

One assumes that this idiom comes straight from the
Low German, Dutch or Flemish areas where the ante-
cedents of Afrikaans are located. South Africa (able
to produce very good apples in some quantity in certain
restricted areas) does not have apples growing widely,
and apples have therefore not entered the Afrikaner-
psyche the way certain other plants indigenous to SA
have done. The same holds true for the expression
"vir 'n appel en 'n ei" (meaning to get something very
cheaply). In fact, the word "ei" does not exist in Afrikaans
in that form, but as "eier" (egg.) Again, one suspects the
expression to be familiar to people speaking the Diets
group of languages.
In the book of Idioms I have recently received as a
present, there are some expressions that I am unfamiliar
with:

Appels! (An exclamation of joy or surprise.)
Hulle deel appels uit: To hit people with their fists.
Om appels te swaai: to have a fist-fight.

I wonder how widely these expressions are used.
