Hi! I am looking for some SA and/or Afrikaaner slang or
everyday phrases. I am from America, and I am afraid that
I don't know much about the culture, but I would love to learn
as much as I can. The differences in expressions is also
very facinating to me, but cheifly it is to be used in email
correspondence. I have a very good friend who lives in SA,
and I would like to be able to use some of the SA slang and
phrases. If any of you could help me out, I know a _little_
Afrikaaner. I would appreciate translations, as languages are
my poor suit. Since talking to my friend I have felt that the
SA accent is very beautiful. Pretty much the whole culture
fascinates me. Well, I have rambled long enough. Thanks
in advance!
P.S. I LOVED the post telling about what different words
meant to Africans and Americans.

Afrikaans sentence structure works a bit different than that of
English as I noted when I wanted to make the following statement:
I will try to keep the sentence structure the same to allow you to
match English and Afrikaans words. This might make the English look a
bit funny though.
A:Ek sal probeer om die sin struktuur dieselfde te hou om jou toe te
laat om Afrikaans en Engelse woorde bymekaar te pas. Dit mag dalk die
Engels 'n bietjie snaaks laat lyk.
E:I will try to the sentence structure the same to keep to you allow
to Afrikaans and English words together to match. That might maybe the
English a bit funny let look.
E:OK, lets forget about that idea.
A:OK, kom ons vergeet van daardie idee.
E:It's rather interresting that one can use both English and Afrikaans
on a daily basis and never notice that the two languages are so
completely different.

Afrikaans. Ek het 'n gemengde Afrikaans/Engelse skool bygewoon, praat
meestal Engels by die werk en het 'n Portugeese meisie.
