Hi all,

I am here in the states and want to learn afrikaans. Is there any taps out
there that I can learn from? I have looked at my local bookstore, but the
U.S. doesnt carry anything like that. Any help would be grateful....

Dankie!
Rick

Have a look at Afrikaans (from the Teach Yourself series) by Helena van
Schalkwyk) (search for it on Amazon.com). Alternatively, there's a list
of textbooks at
http://www.goecities.com/Athens/1615/rhahn/lowlands/afrikaan s_offline.htm

Helena van Schalkwyk's Teach Yourself Afrikaans is sufficient, but rather
dated. The book to buy is called Colloquial Afrikaans by Bruce Donaldson.
I have it and it is excellent, and is accompanied by 2 cassettes (if you buy
them). The author is an expert of Afrikaans and Dutch. It was only
published in May.
As a long term British lurker on this group, I've been trying now (when I
have the time) to write a page for English speakers who want to learn
Afrikaans. There's a lot out there, but not all of it is very helpful. Hopefully
soon I will have my page up.

I am an English speaking Canadian and I want to learn Afrikaans.(my
boyfriend is South African). I have an Afrikaan-English dictionary but
that's not getting me very far. I need to be able to hear how words are
pronounced not just see how they are written. Can anyone help me get
started? (books, tapes, computer programs???).

Leuce:
Go to www.bn.com and do a search for "Afrikaans".
