For once I have to agree with Suidwester. The NP narrowly won the
referendum about the constitutional change to a republic. However, in the
last election under Verwoerd a few years later the NP got a two-thirds
majority. Who gave him that majority? - English speaking voters!
You also forget that a lot of the racial laws and policies the respective
white governements, including Botha and Smuts, inherited from the British
colonialists. The irony of the history is in fact that, after the
Afrikaners had fought colialism for more than a century, they took over the
reigns of a British colony and became "colonialists of a special kind" - as
the ANC refers to the indigenous white population.
