Jammer vriende dat dit nou in Engels geskryf is, maar ek het gedink dat
julle ook die nuwe report sou wou lees.. dit is belangrik dat ons nie net
die keorante se nuus as waar neem nie.....

For anybody interested in TRUE CRIME reports, ie. not the ones used by the
media to distort the message and profess doom.... on South Africa.

The 1st quarterly report on serious crime (4 march 1997) as published by
the SAPS's CRIME MANAGEMENT INFORMATION CENTER. has been released. The
head of the CMIC, dr Chris Kok, clearly identified the urgent need to get
the correct information as fast as possible on the net. It may be found
at http://196.33.208.55/miovs.htm

The annexure to be found at http://196.33.208.55/annexa.htm deals with the
crime statistics of each area and province dealing with individual crimes,
rather than the whole lumped together, they are divided into 32 different
categories, ranging from murder, to child abuse, rape, stock theft etc....

It is a long and detailed report, but very informative... much is being
done, to change the old system and find better ways of reporting crime, so
as to focus valuable police resources on these problems. The Business
Against Crime initiative is also making strong headway and links to its
sites may be found at the website of Gabriel G Smit, ex Colonel, SAP
URL : http://196.33.208.55/ , who is hosting the unofficial site of
the South African Police..

I hope this provides a more accurate report for South Africans away from
home, and that we may make active contributions to report correctly and
become proactive.. rather than spread "rape house" stories that will not
be verified.......

Have a good read fellow jaapies

A few quotes from the report:
**Active steps by the Departments of Justice (like heavier sentences) and
Welfare (like educational programmes) may, for example, actually be the
proper strategy to follow in addressing the high murder rate. Yet another
example is at present provided by the intense and understandably often
highly emotional debate surrounding the incidence of rape, without anybody
really knowing what proportion of rape is accounted for by date rapes,
gang rapes, rapes related to prostitution or even rapes occurring within
marriages, etcetera. Every one of these categories of rape requires a
different preventive strategy.***

***The three main problems regarding the dissemination of crime statistics
until now were the following:
The release of unverified operational data to the media and public.
Misinterpretation of the unverified operational data referred to above.
A constant avalanche of requests (from within the SAPS and from the
public) relating to statistics,
which further tie down the already 50% under-resourced CIMC offices. The
end result is that research cannot really commence in any sensible
way.****
