Hier is 'n artikel van Max - en sy waarnemings ....

Artikel uit "The Star" - Donderdag - 04 April 2002 (bladsy 14 - naas die
redaksionele kommentaar)

"A New Home for New Afrikaners

Make them welcome and they will be better citizens, writes Max du Preez.

They never learn. Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging Eugene Terre'Blanche is still
in jail for assaulting a black man, and so are a dozen or so of his
followers for terrorism or racist attacks. They achieved nothing other than
destroying people's lives and getting locked up.

For all their efforts, South Africa is stable, peaceful and has a democratic
(black) government. And yet there is suddenly a revival of the right wing.

In fact, the revival is happening on two fronts. There are several small
groups of white supremacist fundamentalists on the fringe threatening
sabotage and terror (some of their members were arrested for allegedly
planning to blow up the Vaal Dam); and then there is a more sophisticated,
slightly more mainstream grouping mobilising around the Afrikaans language
and minority rights.

The fringe groups are seriously crazy and quite fanatical. They have the
potential to do considerable damage and kill some people.

But, much like happened with the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, they can
simply be checked by good intelligence work and locked up. They will never
get the support of a significant portion of Afrikanerdom.

I'm more concerned about the second grouping. They are not violent and do
not propagate violent resistance, but increasingly there is the subtle
threat in their speeches or writings, often on the Internet, of "there is a
point beyond which we cannot be pushed" and "nobody wants a bloodbath,
but..."

On the surface these people do not make racist statements, but if one
understands the ethnic code, and I think I do, it is right there under the
surface. They are trying to mobilise a new Afrikaner nationalism, using the
Afrikaans language and the changing of old Afrikaner town names as rallying
points. They do not pose an immediate or even medium-term violent threat.
Still, I regard them as more dangerous because they are camouflaged under a
veneer of respectability, even intellectualism, and they could gradually
spread enough poison in the minds of many ordinary Afrikaners who now simply
try to be good, productive citizens.

These were the thoughts going through my mind when I visited, for the first
time, the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in Oudtshoorn this week. I was
slightly nervous walking around the streets filled with tens of thousands of
white Afrikaners - I haven't exactly been the favourite son of the volk.

My apprehension was completely unfounded. Apart from singer Steve Hofmeyr
beating up a reporter who wrote that he had "kak skoene", the people on the
streets were friendly, cheerful and generous. I don't know what the festival
was like before, but this year it did not feel like a "Boerebazaar" at all -
for one, a number of the festival-goers were Afrikaans speakers with dark
skins.

I was greeted with warmth and courtesy, and even got invited by two uncles
in khaki with forearms like my thighs to go and visit their farms. At most,
there was a gentle joke about "pink Afrikaners" like me also belonging at
the festival. Not that it is a Sunday school picnic. There was some serious
drinking of alcohol, boisterous parties and falling about.

But essentially it is a festival of the arts, and even the hard drinkers
work in a play or two and visit an art exhibition. There was an astonishing
number of high quality productions, plays, music and dance. Some of it was
classic with solid scripts, directing and acting, others were pushing the
boundaries of new theatre. Almost all of it was indigenous. This is the
stuff of the African Renaissance, I thought.

I think the challenge for organisers is to draw more non-Afrikaans speaking
South Africans, without it losing its essentially Afrikaans character. There
is a vibrancy and creativity there, as well as a sense of goodwill, that
South Africa really needs.

I t is likely that a number of festival goers have reservations about the
future of Afrikaans and the increasingly racial nature of our government's
politics.

But they seem to me basically happy and contented people, enjoying their
language and culture without the exclusivity of the past. Deep down they
know the New South Africa is good to them. They will not again be seduced by
right-wing fanatics or narrow-minded nationalism.

Perhaps the New Afrikaners deserve a bit more understanding and sweetness,
from the rest of the nation. The more welcome they are made to feel, the
better South Africans they will become."

Ek stem volmondig saam met wat Max te sê gehad het.
Die artikel was ook gister in The Argus.
