Aai, aai, die Witborskraai,
Hiervandaan na Mosselbaai -
Oompie wil na Tannie vry,

Mosselbaai : a coastal town on the east coast
of South Africa, on the famed Garden
Route. ( "Mossel" : mussel.) Mosselbaai
is on the coast. Inland you find the region
of the Klein Karoo.
Oompie : The diminutive of "oom" (uncle).
However, the word is used for an adult,
a term of endearment and condescension
at the same time. Another diminutive of
"oom", namely "omie" has another shade
of condescension attached to it.
Tannie : Roughly the same holds true for this
diminutive form of "tante." However,
I would say there is less condescension
attached to it, and is often used by young
people to address an older female.
Vry : to court
trek haar neus opsy: literally "pulls her nose to one
side" meaning that she is saying no to him,
looking down on him.
The poet and writer C.J. Langenhoven (who wrote the
national anthem "Die Stem van Suid-Afrika,") wrote
three more verses to this traditional Afrikaans song.
Langenhoven is a cult figure among Afrikaners. He
wrote, among other things, some much loved children's
books, in which he immortalized the region of the Klein
Karoo and the town of Oudtshoorn, where his home is
now a museum. Oudtshoorn (and environment) is famous
for its ostrich farms. The spectacular Cango Caves are
also in the vicinity. The pass through the Swartberge,
connecting the Klein Karoo with the Groot Karoo, has
(I believe) been declared a national monument. I think
it is safe to say that the Klein Karoo itself has assumed a
kind of a cult status in the psyche of the Afrikaner, to a
large degree probably helped by the fact that it was
immortalized by Langenhoven, the same way C.Louis
Leipoldt immortalized the Hantamberge-region.
